Polanyi (1958)1, a chemist turned philosopher is first to use and describe of Tacit Knowledge. The Polanyi's description of 'tacit' is almost means 'hidden', in which tacit knowledge is hidden knowledge. It is hidden from the consciousness of the person. To simplify of tacit knowledge, it is “we don’t know of what we know”. The other part of knowledge is “we know of what we know”. However, there is two portion of it. Beside of “we know of what we know”, can we properly describe it or share it? Implicit Knowledge is “we know of what we know”, but cannot describe it or share it. Explicit Knowledge is “we know of what we know” and can properly describe it & share it with other thru information. As illustrated below by knowledge zone. Special attention to some implicit knowledge can be share. It is we do not know how to describe it properly (lack of better communication tools), or we just want to keep it secret (for leading edge over competitor or some other reason). From university popular rhythmic poem: The more we study, the more we understand(So, why we study? )To the famous education research quote: The more we learn, the more we forget.
This is something that our mind have achieved thru learning and gain of explicit knowledge, then comprehend and linking inside implicit knowledge. After massive of collection knowledge and over period of time “process”, it had immerged into tacit knowledge. |
